The collision between the Milky Way Galaxy and the Andromeda Galaxy.

the grand showdown

Andromeda is a bit bigger than us. So when that happens, Andromeda’s black hole is gonna consume our black hole in a vicious act of galactic canabalism.
Which is an actual term used in astronomy apparently.

“Galactic Cannabalism” sounds like an electro/death metal fusion band.

Galactic cannibalism is one of my favourite astronomical terms, but it doesn’t beat the term used for the stretching out into a long thin tube that occurs when something falls into a black hole (spaghettification) or the term used for a rock thought to be a meteorite but which later turns out to be an ordinary terrestrial rock (meteowrong).

The Project Twins, based in Ireland, have used their graphic art skills to illustrate this collection of strange, unusual and lost words. I am determined to start using as many of these words as I can in conversation - do this with me and together we can help bring them out of obscurity!

Paging

! This reminded me of your word holiday ornaments of yore.

Aw yes! This is gorgeous.

There was, I think, for a while at least, a website where you could go and adopt an elderly, unused word, the idea being that you would use it whenever possible and try to get it back into circulation.

Hamartia is still quite common in literary and theatrical circles, we just use the English “tragic flaw” for it now. (Hamartia is the Greek.)

I have to say I wouldn’t mind if the word Biblioclasm fell into disuse for lack of instance. :D

VidCon 2015 Planning!

edwardspoonhands:

We’re now on our third full day of VidCon 2015 planning here in Missoula. Monica and Laura as well as a new part-time team member Meredith have flown in to hang with the rest of the team. We’re plowing through problems and solutions and then occasionally just having very good new breakout ideas…

I would highly consider not holding it the same weekend as Pride.
